Mobile reception within KNP is extremely limited
Reception is primarily available at main camps and gates, extending a few kilometers into the bush.
Check coverage maps provided by Vodacom, MTN, and Cell C to determine signal strength where you are staying or any other locations where you need a good signal. (Linked Below)
The Highways and roads leading to KNP generally have good service.
(Note: As of 2024, Telkom’s coverage within KNP and surrounding areas is notably less extensive when compared to its competitors. That’s why it’s been left off this list).

Local SIM Cards
Opting for a local SIM card from providers like MTN, Vodacom, Telkom, or Cell C is cost-effective. These providers offer various prepaid service bundles to suit different needs.
Things to Consider:
“RICA” Registration Required
- If you are going to purchase a Local Sim Card, do it at the airport.
- For tourists visiting South Africa, the RICA (Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provision of Communication-Related Information Act) requires that all SIM cards be registered.
- When purchasing a SIM card, you’ll need to present your passport and accommodation address to the sales representative to comply with the law.
- The airport phone stores can handle this effortlessly for tourists whereas normal stores require South African ID and Proof of Address.
Topping Up “Airtime”
- You can buy Airtime vouchers to purchase bundles in KNP grocery stores and most petrol stations around the country.
- Remember to ask the sales assistant for instructions on loading Airtime to your phone.
Store Opening Times
If you are arriving late at night, early morning, or on the weekend, you’ll want to confirm the stores are open when you arrive.
- Vodacom Store Open Hours JNB Airport
- MTN Store Open Hours JNB Airport
- Cell C Store Open Hours JNB Airport
If you’re connecting domestically or have a tight schedule, consider using an eSIM or a roaming package to avoid the need to visit these stores during a short layover.

eSIMs
eSIMs are digital SIM cards embedded in your device, offering convenience and flexibility without the need for a physical card. Several providers offer eSIM plans that utilise South Africa’s mobile networks.
Things to Consider
- Check whether your phone supports eSIMs. This is not a common feature on all devices.
- Verify which networks your eSIM provider utilises and check their coverage maps.
- If they don’t operate on Vodacom, MTN, or Cell C networks, consider opting for a local SIM card through one of these providers.
Where To Purchase
- eSIMs can be purchased online through various providers’ websites before your trip.
- Activation is typically done via a QR code or through an app.
International Roaming Plans:
Some carriers offer specific roaming plans for South Africa, providing data, calling, and texting allowances at reduced rates compared to standard roaming charges.
Things to Consider
- Confirm with your phone provider which South African networks they have roaming agreements with.
- Use coverage maps to assess network availability in Kruger National Park and surrounding areas.
