Overtaking on Single Lane Highway/ Road

When driving on the N4 or other roads en-route to KNP, you’ll encounter single-lane highways, which means you may need to overtake slow-moving trucks or be aware of other vehicles overtaking you.

There’s no need to be concerned, as this is similar to what you’ll see in many other places.

In this post, we’ll walk you through the road signs you’ll come across and offer tips on how to navigate them safely.

Recommendation: Avoid driving single lane highways/ roads after nightfall.

Clear visibility and awareness of oncoming traffic are essential for overtaking. While people certainly drive this route at night, it makes the journey more tense and less enjoyable.

Overtaking Lanes

Overtaking lanes appear every few kilometers, providing a designated section of the road for safely passing other vehicles. These sections offer a short opportunity to overtake and typically look like this:

Part 1: The overtaking lane opens
Part 2: Choose the appropriate lane based on your speed, the speed of the vehicle ahead, and the speed of the vehicle behind you.
Part 3: The lane closes

Overtaking Available Road Markings

The road markings in the center of the road will indicate whether:

You’re permitted to overtake if the oncoming lane is clear.
Vehicles in the oncoming lane can overtake as long as they don’t obstruct your path.
Overtaking is prohibited for both lanes.

Summary

  • A solid line means it’s unsafe to leave your lane.
  • A dashed line allows you to overtake, but only if it’s clear, as oncoming traffic has the right of way in their lane.
